EVENT UPDATE
This news comes with a heavy heart. Due to continuing unfavourable weather and predictions showing worsening conditions into the weekend, Reds Backyard Ultra will be cancelled for this weekend (Saturday 2nd August 2025).
After lengthy discussions with Kembla Joggers and Wollongong Council, it is evident that the risk of hosting the event this weekend is too high due to flooding of the course and surrounding areas, combined with high winds and the potential for falling trees. In making this decision, we have prioritised the well-being of all participants, volunteers, supporters and staff, as well as preventing any long-term damage to the grounds.
We understand that cancelling the event this weekend will be inconvenient and disappointing for many of you. We don't want to see anyone in this situation, and we will strive to provide the next best outcome.
We have sent all runners an email with some more details and will continue to communicate with everyone as we work through next steps.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Welcome to Red's Backyard Ultra! We are excited you are here...
A Backyard Ultra is a race not quite like any other. It is a last-one-standing event where participants run a loop (known as a ‘yard’) of 6.7056 km every hour on the hour until there is only one runner left; all other runners are technically a DNF. Runners are rivals, but they are also teammates. They combine their efforts to complete as many yards as possible. However, it is not until only two runners remain that it becomes a race to see who will win.
Why run a race where there is a substantial chance of a DNF? Because it is a race against yourself more than anyone else. How far can you push yourself? 10 hours, 24 hours, 2 days! It is the ultimate endurance test of the body, mind and soul. 2023 and 2024 were such amazing weekends and we look forward to seeing old faces and new come and play, toe the line, test their limits, and share your journey with us on Saturday 2 August 2025.
